WELCOME to the very first installment of my Interviews with Experts series. The idea is to give you QUICK insights from Social Media professionals who are at the top of their industry, asking them a slight variation on one simple question: How can every Small Business use Social Media to grow their business? And we’ll cover the gamut of platforms: blogging, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Goggle+, Pinterest, etc.
Mike Stelzner is the founder & CEO of Social Media Examiner, ranked as one of the top 10 business blogs by Technorati & AdAge. It’s also the world’s largest online social media magazine with more than 190,000 daily email subscribers and an annual readership of 5.5 million people. Mike Stelzner is the author of the books Launch, and Writing White Papers, as well as the host of the Social Media Marketing podcast. He was kind enough to take time away from his incredibly packed schedule to give us some great advice.

Dan Gallo: Mike, in your expert opinion, what’s your best advice the average Small Business can use to grow their business using Social Media?
Mike Steltzner: At its core, it’s all about focusing on the needs of people with content.
Here’s the simple formula: Great content, plus other people, minus marketing messages, equals growth.
It’s useful for the person who wants to quickly catapult a business to the next level. The number one reason it works is because it establishes you as a trusted resource—which is your biggest marketing obstacle. You’ll attract an audience of loyal, raving fans who want to learn from you. Many of those will evangelize your business.
Think of it as 3 simple steps:
Step One – Determine who you want to reach and what they’re interested in.
Step Two – Give them what they want for free.
Step Three – Grow.
Dan Gallo: Mike, I know how hard it is to be that succinct. What you’ve provided is as radical as any SBE can imagine and highly valuable. Thank you!

To Small Business Enterprises: Don’t just read Mike’s simple formula, write it on the white board in your office. Have everyone who’s involved with your business think about what he’s saying. Debate it. Visit Social Media Examiner and check out the social media success stories he highlights and ask this question: How is Mike’s formula embodied in these successes? Then evaluate any of your social media efforts against his formula. Finally, follow his 3 simple steps and let us know your results.
